I've encoutered an error with my game lately that makes the game crash about half way in, and its exactly at the same place every time. Its starts at the G-embryo boss. The music and parts of the sound suddenly dissapears. The issues continue till u meet Anette with Ada, and when the FMV are suppose the begin the game freezes and crashes. Then this error appears; "Failed to create sound buffer error". Ive tried reinstalling the game, my sound/video drivers, but the problem persists. This has actually happened on both of my laptops of late. Feels like ive tried everything, and tbh starting to get frustrated. Has anyone else experienced this error? Has anyone got some tips or advices for me?

Thanks in advance!

I assume your using the 1.1 patch?
Is there anyway you could use 1.0? or do you get a direct x error otherwise?

One thing you should clarify though, is your game crashing during the FMV's? (cinematic clips) or during the in game cutscenes(events)?

I've seen multiple people get the sound buffer errors, using the 1.1 patch, and it seems to trigger during in game events, not the FMV's
if the FMV's are giving you a hard time though, i would Suggest disabling them through the windows registry, There is a guide on that back in the bio2 section buried somewhere. That way the game will auto skip all Cinematic FMV's , so atleast those wont give you problems, but the sound buffer error is usually triggered by in game events, not the FMV's just to be clear.

Hey, Dchaps, and thanks for the reply. Well appreciated!

I guess im using the 1.1 patch? I just downloaded and installed the ISO from residentevilspeedruns.com, but havent applied any patches after that. Ill try to find the 1.0 exe and patch over if i can and see if it helps.

And yes, the games crashes during in game events and not FMV's, ive already disabled them in the registry.

Maybe you are already using 1.0 then if you didn't run any patch on your game, for the most part I've only seen people using the 1.1 patch get sound buffer errors during game events, never seen anyone get them on 1.0, my guess is its a sound card incompatibility if you've already tried downgrading your sound drivers, When the Dialog box pops up throwing the error, Can you not Click the prompt and continue the game? Sadly I don't think anyone has a fix for this, maybe try different compatbility modes or playing with some of the sound channel registry keys, It's an old game so it has alot of issues with newer hardware.

Yeah its very weird, and ive tried all the compatability modes but the problem was still there. I have no idea what causes it. Ive literally tried everything.

Its very weird that both of my laptot with completely different specs and hardware are giving the same error, at the exactly same spot. That makes me think it has something to do with what version of windows you're running.

Ive now downgraded my windows 7 Pro 64 bit, to windows home premium 64 bit, and the game runs fine. So ive kinda concluded that running this on windows 7 pro, probably isnt the best windows to run it on. Both my laptops ran windows 7 Pro.

Could be the case, i'm Currently running it on windows 7 ultimate 64bit without any issues, I never had any issues on windows xp either, I heard from pyman that Windows 8.1 gave him direct x issues and forced him to use the 1.1 patch, Seem's operating systems are indeed playing a big role, I'm glad your issue is fixed though.

Thanks, man! Im really glad it all worked out. Conclusion: Dont run Biohazard 2 sourcenext on Windows 7 Professional!
I had the same problem.

Got crashes at the annette birkin fmv, and at the end of the game. Also some music did not eventually play at all, getting the failed sound buffer error.

I fixed that by changing my soundcard sampling rate from 48000Hz to 44100Hz.
I thought to do this when I saw this value in Biohazard 2 registry.
