This thread shall help you mastering Resident Evil 4. Auddy07, the current NTSC NG+ GCN world record holder, uploaded a very helpful glitch tutorial but I will explain the mechanics here as well. Give me some time. :-)

Difficulty Adjustment: Resident Evil 4 has a dynamic difficulty. What does that mean? Everything affects the difficulty if you play on normal difficulty. This mechanic does not work on "Easy" because this is already the easiest setting possible. On "Professional", the highest difficulty, this DA is not triggerable either.
As already mentioned, everything affects the difficulty on "Normal". Accuracy, deaths and stamina. That means if you get hit more often, die or have bad aiming, the game adjusts the AI causing them to be less aggressive, less damaging and their hit box to be smaller because they attack you only in one direction instead of turning around during the startup frames of their attack. The game will spawn less enemies aswell sometimes. This mechanic is very well known for Chapter 3-1. If you take six hits or more in Chapter 2-3, the game will adjust the difficulty temporarily to "Easy" causing the enemies to be less aggressive and there will be way less enemies in the waterhall.

Ditman Glitch: The most famous glitch in Resident Evil 4. You will need the "Striker" for that. If you play New Game, you can buy this weapon in Chapter 4-1 right before the Verdugo boss fight. This weapon grants you to increase your movement speed by almost 50%. If you aim with the Striker you will see the red laser that helps you to aim. If you switch the weapon before the red laser shows up, you will doing everything faster by 1.5. It is important that you change the weapon and not selecting the Striker again. This glitch gets cancelled on almost every situation though. If you take damage, guard yourself, open doors, trigger QTEs, enter CGI cutscenes, leaving an area, healing or aiming with the Striker during the glitch, the glitch gets cancelled immediately. This glitch is essential for your speedrun so make sure to master it in terms of fast execution.

Wanna be speedrunner scrub
I had no idea that normal difficulty was like that, I always wondered why it felt harder at times then easier at others, thanks for the really informative post! I might try some of this stuff, especially the Ditman Glitch!

Was a memory address discovered that showed the Difficulty Adjustment? If so, by who, so I can ask them and use an app such as Cheat Engine to display it on the Steam version?

...Actually, that piques my interest, a lot, because I think it will go a long way toward me actually learning this game.

Talk with A-M, he knows something about it.

I wish I knew alittle bit more about this stuff. Theres some trainers out there with some options that are interesting like a gametimer being displayed.. http://www.pcgamestrainers.com/resident-evil-4-v1-1-0-trainer-22/ -- Not that its exactly what were looking for in terms of displaying difficulty adjustment. I'd like to know too if it'd be possible to create some sort of mod that could show where every frame/object that shows interaction that way it might be a bit easier to find new glitches

But are mods, at least display mods, allowed ?
If yes, that would be a good idea, and it will remove the split so we never forget to split and/or never need to, with the displayed igtimer. If the IGT is the based time of course

I would say so, aslong as your not editing memory in any way, I see nothing wrong with digging deep into the games code to find useful information to improve your gameplay, that is something totally different then cheating imo.

Hey all, I hope someone checks this forum every once in a while because I need some major help with the village fight for NG pro. I can't seem to consistently trigger the cutscene after throwing the grenade out the window and I have no idea how to pinpoint where I am messing up. I've tried a few different approaches to it, even jumping out the window and throwing the grenade to have more ganado bunched up, but it's still inconsistent.

I recorded several attempts (first one works, all the others don't) to see if someone with more knowledge on this part can point out what I'm doing wrong. I need all the help I can get!

JTB - as far as I know, there's a very specific positioning trick. Enemies spawn based on where you have killed them in relation to your position on the map (complicated, I know) so if you stand in specific spots, then you will trigger the exact same spawns every time.

Stormhenry taught me that if you stand behind the wood pile on your left when you shoot the first two ganado in the village fight, then it will ALWAYS take only two ganado killed to trigger the next wave, for instance. I was mad as hell when I first learned that, as if people had known it for years but never commentated on it, like I was supposed to know from just looking at uncommentated videos.

This game has a LOT of internal mechanics that need to be put into plain words for people to learn if New Game is going to be run. Ever.

Your throw angle at the end has to be optimized. You have to throw it out at the bottom right.

I am planning to do a Q&A stream for New Game soon. Gather all of your questions and let me have it. You too Carcinogen.

Alright cool, I'll work on that. PC seems to be slower in aiming grenades, which would make sense why I don't have issues on PS3.

Also, I'm planning to start a walkthrough/pastebin for NG pro this week as well, it would be really neat to have resources for both categories that new runners can refer to :)

Hope this is okay to post here. I started learning the basics of Resident Evil 4 last week (NG Any%). I was interested exactly how the dynamic difficulty mechanic worked, so wrote a little tool to find out more. I understand most of the experienced runners already know how it works, but hopefully it might be useful for people who, like me, are just starting the game.

source and download link up on github: https://github.com/Glurmo/RE4-Memory-Reader

this is only intended for testing/practicing purposes, in my opinion watching memory values during a run shouldn't be allowed.

The main dynamic difficulty memory address (for the latest steam version) is at baseAddress + 0x085BE74 if you want to just see the value through something like cheat engine instead of using a separate app, it's a 2-byte value and ranges from 0-10999.

On normal difficulty every 1000 increment to this value increases the difficulty, so 3000-3999 is the same difficulty, but 4000 is harder and 2999 is easier. The starting value for Normal is 3500. At 4000 the enemies start tracking you with their attacks.

Some approximate changes in the difficulty value:
- Dodging an attack: +70
- Killing an enemy: +100
- Getting hit: -360
- Dying / Killing Ashley: -1000
- Missing a shot: -5 (Handgun), -1 (TMP), -16 (Striker), -42 (Rifle)
- Killing a boss: 0

A few interesting things which might or might not be helpful:

- At most boss fights the game will normalize the difficulty back up to 5500, you can prevent this by choosing retry or dying / killing ashley in the area where you encounter the boss: Del Lago, El Gigante #1, El Gigante #2, Mendez, Verdugo, Salazar (can't re-enter room to collect ptas), U3, Krouser

- If you die 3 times at the start of 1-2 (takes ~20 seconds on PC) you lower the difficulty to < 1999 meaning Del Lago only requires 6 hits to kill. Not sure if it's actually any faster overall, but you can usually 1-cycle him removing most of the RNG.

- If the difficulty is < 4000 you can kill Mendez with 3 incendiary grenades instead of 5.

Great stuff Glurmo. Skullbot published that kind of software earlier aswell.

I started an in-depth glitch tutorial a few days ago and started with the Ditman Glitch. I will continue with the glitches which should be used in the HD version. I hope you enjoy it.
I've been working on being able to get the stun grenade a little more easily in 3-4 when you save Ashley. I don't have a vid of it yet, but here's what it basically is:
-Free her with the launched
-Fire down at the torch to kill the 2 ganados
-Immediately after, turn left and shoot a rocket at the vase that has the launcher
-Run to Luis' dead body and quickly fire the rocket before the cutscene
-After shooting the final rocket to kill the 2 ganados that come later, run and get the stun grenade and then immediately shoot a rocket at the wall to make Ashley's part easier like normal

I've found that this is a more guaranteed way to get the stun grenade without having to use ditman. It may be used already, but I havent seen anyone do it yet.

Hey all, was looking up random RE4 stuff and found this advice for stopping the Steam version from crashing. Gonna give it a try and leave it for anyone else that encounters this problem.

#5 Resident Evil 4 HD – RE4/Bio4.exe has stopped working Fix

If you are using high refresh rate monitor, you may face off black screen and RE4/Bio4.exe has stopped working error. To fix this problem, go to My Documents\Games\Capcom\RE4, open config file into notepad or other text editors. Then change the values such as 1680 1050 60, here the first two values are resolution and the last one is monitor’s refresh rate. You just need to change the refresh rate at 60.
